US Open Qualifying
My commitment this year is to enter US Open qualifying in April. I'm focusing on training physically, mentally, technically, and spiritually to be at my best come April’s event. I copied a link to a Psychology Podcast that has been a helpful reminder while I train. Anyone training to improve their game can benefit from psychological training. Listen to the The Mental Golf Show here: ⏬ Double Click the picture to follow link to listen ⛳️ A few quick topics that my clients and

Golf is a Target Game
One element I chose to add to my lesson time lately is playing catch with students. The purpose is to remind each other what the goal is when you play. The goal is to hit your target, as consistently as possible, which builds confidence. Curiously, I ask how much they were thinking about their mechanics. The answers are mostly, “not at all.” The only goal in our mind is to reach our target, which in this case is the other person. That doesn’t mean we always hit our target, bu

5 Stokes Off Your Average Score Guaranteed!
For the recreational golfer, the easiest way to take strokes off your game is to play this one game called “Down in 3.” The recreational golfer is someone who plays once a week and maybe practices once or twice per week. The game is relatively simple. From 30 yards or less from the hole, can you score 3 strokes or less, regardless of the situation? The situation could be a bunker shot, thick rough, a chip shot from just off the green, uneven lies, above the hole chipping down

Happy Masters Week!
Given the expected conditions in Round 1 today, the players short games will be heavily tested. Accomplishing a Green in Regulation (GIR) becomes even more challenging with higher winds. As some of the players get frustrated with the wind, they will have to reset mentally to prepare for some awkward wedge shots and be tested with clutch putts from inside 10 ft. As a player yourself, how could you test your game to empathize with the challenge they are facing today? Adapt to t

Remember, Golf is a Game 🙂
If you're anything like me, golf can be very stressful. The stress often comes from the pursuit of a "better golf game." We love golf for many reasons, so how can the love of the game become so frustrating? Part of the answer lies within the question. Love is inherently challenging. Anyone in a loving relationship can attest to that fact. When you love something, you take it very seriously, so if problems arrise, you want to resolve them as quickly as possible. We all walk a

Count to 5… Swing
If you don't mind, I'd like to occupy your Concious Mind for 5 seconds. But first, please grab your putter and a few golf balls. Second, find a place to putt from about 5 feet, whether that's at home into a cup on the carpet or at the golf course. Once you have completed these first two steps, I want you to complete a simple exercise. After you address the golf ball with your putter and are aimed squarely at your target, I want you to count to 5 and then swing your putter. Re

Feel Your Swing
If you have played other sports, you should understand how important "feel" really is for success. If you're running down the basketball court on a fast break and you're going to perform a layup to score, you know you have to feel the speed that you're running so you don't fall over or go too slow and get caught. You also have to feel how much energy to jump with and how much to release the ball into the basket. The feel of a layup is different than a feel of shooting a free

Believe In Yourself
One of the seemingly smallest aspects to overlook in the process of improvement is whether or not you believe success is achievable. Everyone has a story to tell others about themselves that may or may not be completely true or honest, but my focus is the story that runs on a loop in our own minds everyday about self belief. Our general outlook on the world and ourselves is a combination of nature, nuture, and divinity. The story can be viewed as a program that can and will c

“Keep Fighting” - Lucas Glover
What an impressive win for Lucas Glover! Back to back weeks! His final message was to "Keep Fighting" when things aren't going the way you want. What other choice do we really have anyway? It's so easy in the game of golf to feel lost when you're in a rut. Whether it's golf, or any other part of life, showing up is half the battle. The other half is putting in the work. That formula holds true for all of us. It's only a matter of time before everything clicks. Of course life

Scottish Open! Links Style. How’s your chipping?
Links style golf is unique and historic. Tight lies with gale force winds! Knowing how to flight your golf ball at different trajectories is critical for success. For most recreational golfers, flighting the golf ball is a bit above their skill level. However, Chipping is an effective skill to practice while focusing on trajectory. In honor of the Scottish Open, and Open Championship next week, head out to your local golf course and play around on the practice green. Play 9 h

SGN Golf Simulator Business
This past weekend my brother and I played simulator golf at SGN Golf, located in Mason, Ohio. They offer private hitting bays with TVs and seating up to 5 players. Two of their bays have additional cameras and software for Golf Professional to offer lessons. They use E6 gaming software which has plenty of fun courses to choose from and mini games such as closest to the pin and longest drive. I met with the owners, Drew and David, about offering golf lessons at their facility.

First Round of the Year!
The weather was nice enough to play my first round of the year on March 23rd at Mound Golf Course. Figure 1: Scorecard This golf course is located in Miamisburg, Ohio. The course is a friendly 9-Hole, well maintained, and relatively economical place to play. The cost was only $12 to walk, which makes learning to play the game very affordable, especially when there is a common stigma against golf that it is too expensive. My plan this year is to play as much as possible throug

Keep it simple
It's easy to overthink the golf swing on the golf course. One way to simplify your thoughts on the course is to set a goal for the round. The goal should be simple like "staying below the hole." You want to create goals that allow you to focus on the goal instead of focusing on your swing mechanics too much. There will always be an element of technique that has to be thought about and felt while you're playing. Having a routine that ends with committing to your swing and the

A Golf Paradox
Do you want to be a more consistent golfer? Do you want to get better so that you can finally beat your friends butts? This is really simple to achieve. All you have to do is quit your job, practice and play about 6 hours per day, hire a coach, get fit for all your clubs, workout 3X per week, and eat a plant based diet! Who wants to sign up? Golf is hard! The challenge is part of the reason we get addicted. A good shot here and there keeps us hooked. It also doesn't hurt havi

The Early Fundamentals of the Golf Swing
Ever wonder how the pros create the positions in their golf swing that you see on TV? They make it look so easy don’t they? I am going to explain one of the first core fundamentals in the golf swing to help you improve solid contact and consistency. Figure 1: This first image shows the amount of Arm Extension that is desirable in the takeaway, or backswing. It’s important to learn what it feels like to extend in the backswing because it keeps the arm swing connected to the bo
