Count to 5… Swing
If you don't mind, I'd like to occupy your Concious Mind for 5 seconds. But first, please grab your putter and a few golf balls. Second, find a place to putt from about 5 feet, whether that's at home into a cup on the carpet or at the golf course.
Once you have completed these first two steps, I want you to complete a simple exercise. After you address the golf ball with your putter and are aimed squarely at your target, I want you to count to 5 and then swing your putter. Repeat this routine 10 times.
The purpose of this exercise is to train your Subconscious Mind to be automatic. You can use this exercise with any golf shot and also many aspects of your day.
For me personally, putting is a nightmare without a routine. Many recreational players feel this way moreso with their tee shot, approach shot, and chipping. The thoughts racing in your conscious mind distract you from performing your best swing.
Our brains do not multitask effectively in the golf swing. The easier it is for you to trust a repetitive motion without interruption, the more efficient you will become.
Start small with putting and see if you notice a difference when you occupy your conscious mind by counting to 5, and then allow your subconscious mind to swing at your target freely.
Let me know what you think!
