Ever hit it well on the driving range, then struggle to take that same game to the course? Building a stock swing you trust is valuable. But hitting the same driver or seven iron over and over only prepares you for part of the game. In this video, I demonstrate how different situations call for different shots—including playing low under a branch and high over a tree—and explain why your practice should include different clubs, distances, trajectories, chipping, and putting. Keep working on your motion, and give yourself opportunities to adapt it. The goal is to build skills you can trust when it’s time to play and score. How quickly do lost shots add up over 18 holes? Join me and my student Max for a full playing lesson as he continues his quest to become a scratch golfer. We’re chasing a round under 80 while looking at where strokes slip away—and what he can work on to lower his scores. With cart-cam conversations, shot tracers, and a running lost-shot counter, you’ll follow the decisions, chips, and putts that shape his round. We identify 11 lost shots along the way. What does a golf swing have in common with movements in other sports? In this video, I break down one of my students’ swings to explain the kinematic sequence—how the pelvis, torso, arm, and club move and build speed during the swing. Using comparisons to other sports, I explain what those movements mean and how to connect the information on the screen to the motion you feel. The goal is to understand your movement, identify what needs attention, and give your practice a clear purpose. Want help understanding your own swing? What do golf instructors see players struggle with most, and how do they help golfers improve? In our first golf podcast episode, I sit down with fellow golf professional Tony McMullin of Smart Golf Academy for an open conversation about golf, coaching, and the different ways players learn. Tony and I discuss how we each got started in golf, our backgrounds as instructors, and the philosophies that influence how we teach the game. We also talk about the challenges we commonly see golfers face, what students hope to accomplish through lessons, and how we approach helping players develop more consistent and effective golf swings. Throughout the conversation, we discover quite a bit of common ground in our approaches to coaching, learning, and understanding the game. In the final 20 minutes, we take the conversation onto the simulator and use Tony’s Smart2Move 3D pressure plates to explore how golfers interact with the ground during the golf swing. We look at pressure shifts, ground reaction forces, movement patterns, and how technology can help instructors better understand what’s happening in a player’s swing. ⛳ IN THIS EPISODE: 00:00 - Introduction 00:30 - Tony McMullin’s Golf Background 05:30 - Zach’s Golf Background 10:00 - Our Coaching Experience & Teaching Philosophies 23:00 - Why Consistency Is So Difficult in Golf 28:00 - Managing Expectations & Improving Your Game 31:45 - What Should Golfers Focus On? 38:50 - Smart2Move Pressure Plates & 3D Swing Analysis 51:40 - Zach’s 10-Minute Golf Lesson 1:00:00 - Final Thoughts & Takeaways ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS Zach Gerlach | Golf by Zach I offer in-person golf instruction and online coaching focused on helping golfers understand their swings, improve their ball striking, and develop their games through individualized instruction.
