Putting Games
Playing games while practicing can help with focus and engagement. Having another player to practice with creates more motivation and fun to practice.
Quick statistic, Putting accounts for 40 Percent of our scorecard, so it’s worth spending a couple hours on putting exercises each week.
Game #1
Drawback Putting:
The goal of this game is to test your ability to get the golf ball to the hole but also within a 2 foot radius if it goes past the hole. 100 percent of putts that fall
short don’t go in. Rules:
1) If a putt falls short, you “Drawback” your next putt by the length of your putter before you attempt to finish the hole. This creates some urgency in making sure you at least reach the target distance.
2) If your distance exceeds 2 ft beyond the hole, you “Drawback” your next putt a putters length away on the other side of the whole. This encourages you to not only get to the hole but also tests your distance control skills. 3) Putts no longer than 20 ft for this exercise. 4) Play 9 holes. Par=18
Approximate time: 10-15 minutes
Game #2
3-Foot Circle
This game is relatively simple. Place 4 tees around the hole at a 3 ft distance. Record 30 Total Putts and mark your make percentage. Tour Professionals make 99 percent of putts inside 3 ft. Your goal is to make 27/30.
Approximate time: 10 Minutes
Game #3
Lag Putting
From outside of 20ft, take 3 golf balls and try to lag them within a 3ft circle around the hole. This helps avoid 3-Putts. Repeat this exercise 10X from different distances. The Goal is to get all 30 putts within 3ft.
Approximate time: 10-15 minutes.
These are just a few easy games to setup for free at your local golf course putting green. The fundamentals of putting are very similar to the rest of the golf swing. You want to be able to control Distance, Direction, and Solid Contact to
create a consistent swing. These games help train you to focus on scoring instead of just hitting the best shot possible every time, which can lead to over swinging and imbalance.
Let me know how you do!
