How-To Aim

Aiming at your target is one of those fundamentals that is easy to take for granted. The majority of players aim by squaring their body to the target before they think about their clubface. The issue with aiming your body first is our vision being less accurate. Our vision is only accurate from directly behind the golf ball.

The next time you practice try these steps:

1) Identify your target by standing a few feet behind the golf ball.

2) Create and imaginary line from your target to the golf ball.

3) Pick a spot on that imaginary line, a couple feet in front of the golf ball to Aim.

4) Aim your club-face first with just one hand, preferably your trail hand or strong hand, and then align your body.

The reason these steps are important is because if you think your body is aimed on target, but it’s not, your golf swing is going to compensate somewhere to over rotate the club-face to square the face to your target.

Something as simple as inconsistent aim can create a golf swing over time that you don’t want. One tip to avoid this problem is to use Alignment Sticks. You could also use a golf club if you don’t have alignment sticks.

Square your feel to the alignment stick that is aiming at your target. The alignment stick should be aimed slightly inside of your target line, instead of directly pointing at your target, because your feet are aimed slightly inside of your target line when you setup.

This is one of the basic beginner fundamentals of learning How To Practice, and can be very helpful to you in the long term. Even if you’ve been playing for a long time, it won’t hurt to check your aim and get in the habit of using alignment tools when you practice and also going through the steps I listed above in order to aim as accurately as possible.

As always, thank you for reading and please leave any comments, question, or recommendations for future posts.
